This is so upsetting. I googled the location (41st & Alameda in Los Angeles) to see if the garden was still there and was SO bummed to find two huge lots of dirt. The 12-year-old, 14 acre garden was bulldozed. I can guarantee that the only reason this garden was even an issue was because of $. The city knew that a large amount of people were living off of this land instead of buying their food in stores. Pure bullshit.

Yeah, it's really saddening. The government makes it reaaallly hard to appreciate them a lot of the time.

I know! We have small community gardens in the city of San Diego, but I'm yet to come across one even a fraction of the size in this video.

Well I'm glad you took the time to watch it. You live in Los Angeles, don't you? Did you hear about this while it was happening?

Why do gardeners get no respect from cities?
It's the same story in my city-Pittsburgh, I had taken over a corner of city property that was filled with weeds and old tires, and even an entire abandoned car.
I planted bushes, flowers and added large stones, ferns etc.
I couldn't get the Pittsburgh Police to enforce cars from parking on it illegally, and eventually a construction company hired by the city stored heavy equipment on it and killed it.
I still feel bitter and defeated...I'm going to get it out of my system by making a post about it soon.
What LA did to those gardeners, was even worse.

Wow, what a crock of bullshit. That really upsets me that they did that to your garden. If everyone took the time to create small gardens in otherwise vacant and ugly spots, our air quality would improve, people would subconsciouly and consciouly become more inspired and the world would be a more aesthetically-pleasing place to live in.

Fuck the system.

That really sucks. Reminds me of when they decided to close a nice public park where I use to live and then plowed down the whole plot of land for another shopping outlet.
There are so many of these shopping outlets around.
They didn't need another one.
And the trees were so old and so full of life.
I could feel their pain everytime I drove by it as they were cutting them down.

That's horrible! It's so sad watching an old tree with such history being cut down.
